Chapter 20

UNLIKE IN HOLLYWOOD, people don’t really get knocked out by blows to the back of their head. The actual experience is more akin to being skunk-drunk and having a very painful hangover, all at the same time. One can still sense what’s going on around them, but these feelings are usually dulled to the point of incoherence.

My thoughts were clouded in a painful daze. I could feel hands carrying me down the stairs and into the parking lot. Esmeralda’s pleading voice came next, asking whoever it was to spare my life. The next flashback was of my hands and feet being bound, right before my mouth was tourniqueted with a thick smelly rag of some sort.

When I finally started to come to, all I could see was darkness. My body felt cramped, and the sensation of being tossed around made me realize I was being driven inside the trunk of a car along a bumpy road.

By the time the blinding light came over my eyes as the trunk was opened up, my mind had finally coalesced back into clear-headedness. I whipped my head around as I was led along a gangplank and onto a rusty-hulled ship. Looking at my captor’s face, I recognized him as one of Dindo’s goons.

I was led down into a lower deck before a hatch was opened in front of me. Goon Number One gave me a bucktoothed smile before pushing me into the small cell. I stumbled past the entryway and nearly hit my face along the sharp edges of a corroded bulkhead, but I was able to twist away at the last second, my shoulder taking the brunt instead.

Hearing the goon laugh, I heard the hatch being slammed shut behind me. A single light bulb dimly illuminated the dingy room as I slowly rightened myself up to a sitting position, facing the now sealed doorway.

The restraints around my wrists and ankles were evidently those same plastic zip ties we used in Afghanistan. I bided my time, patiently waiting for the aches in my body to gradually go away while regaining my strength.

After what seemed like a few hours, the floor beneath me began to vibrate as the old ship’s engine came to life. We were heading out to sea, and I had a distinct feeling that I knew exactly where the destination would be.

More time passed, and I heard the sounds of pounding footsteps just outside the room. The hatch opened up once again, and I looked up at Dindo’s leering face. He strode inside like a world conqueror, stopping a mere few inches away from my knees.

“We meet again, Ryden,” he said, right before delivering a pointed kick to my right shin.

The sudden pain made me groan. I was lucky he wore sneakers, otherwise it might have fractured a bone instead of just badly bruising my flesh.

George’s voice came up from behind him. “Stop it, mate. We’re here to talk to him, remember?”

Dindo growled with rage for half a minute before he stooped lower and removed the gag from my mouth.
